This lovely couple was one of the first to get involved with the cause of breast cancer, and in return the state paid for their stay with funds provided by the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, which then raised to $635,000. The donation of the money came under an almost unprecedented financial blockade from the state. It's our obligation to all those people who are affected by this, said Mr. Marcellini, who has been a member of the state's Board of Health since 1995, until last year. There is nothing they can do to stop it. I hope it takes more than five minutes. Marcellini and three other women have already died from their illness, with one of them now on life support from a transplant. A group calling itself Transformed Cancer Survivors said that Ms. Marcellini and Ms. Janelle N. Stahl, who are co-chairs of the Women's Auxiliary Society of Washington, were the first to donate the funds. The women and their families, many of whom have been in the care of Ms. Stahl and Mr. McCreary, were given $50,000 on Jan. 31, and will now be able to spend the rest of their lives getting help from the state.
